A Geological time scale divides time into Eons, Eras, Periods, Epochs and Ages. It is based on the geological rock record and relies on the ages of particular fossils, in particular layers of rock which sit on top of each other in a sequence. What this means is, rocks in Australia can be matched with rocks in England or China or Africa – all by fossils.
